Concept FAIL

This post definitely belongs in the FAIL category.

Growing up as a little artist, I would ALWAYS redesign the local sports teams logos or uniforms. It was just a natural thing for a sports fan and artist to do. I didn’t give a crap about any other teams other than the Flyers, Eagles and Phillies. I’d come up with crap concept after crap concept – and at the time they were, I thought – much better than what the teams were currently using. But when you look back on these saved masterpieces, you thank anyone who will listen that you didn’t submit the design, unsolicited, to the respective teams. The key word here is unsolicited.

There is a GREAT piece on ESPN’s website by Paul Lukas, who runs UniWatchBlog.com, about aspiring and professional artists who submit concepts, unsolicited, to professional sports teams. You know exactly how this turns out, right? The most fascinating part of the article is of a man, Darryl Swint, who claims that the St. Louis Blues ripped off his redesigned logo and uniform ideas. When you see his concept side by side with the current Blues uniform, you can clearly see how this man is deranged, past the point of any strong prescription medication help. Gee, an arch and the bluenote together? Why, that can only be dreamed up by a true artistic genius!

A little advice for you concept artists: Don’t stuff the only copy of your concept design in an envelope and hand it to someone who you don’t know. And don’t drop it off in the mailbox either. Just post it on websites for fun, like PuckDrawn or Sportslogos.net or any other sports fan websites. If you were any good, you’d already be working for an agency.

This is why I’ll NEVER create a concept logo or jersey. What’s the point? One, I’m not getting paid. B., I’m not as good as those who work for an agency, specializing in sports logos. And three, I’m not getting paid!

You’ve seen the side by side images, now tell me what you think. Here’s a link to the FULL STORY.

  1. I can see why he would be upset, but at the same time, its not even close.

  2. If I were to guess, over the years the Blues probably received hundreds of unsolicited AND solicited concepts that incorporated the arch and the bluenote. This guy is delusional.

  3. I’m glad they didn’t use his concept because that’s another black jersey.

  4. I read about this a while back and I don’t think the guy has a leg to stand on. It would be like a Ranger’s fan whining because they submitted a logo that use the Statue of Liberty and then the Rangers made a jersey that had the Statue of Liberty on the front. You can’t claim a national monument as an original design… even if you stuck the team logo in front of it.

  5. Yep. It’s a lot of wishful thinking on this guys part. Lets be honest – his designs SUCK.

  6. Really puckdrawn, I don’t hate them, its not the most original thing in the world, but i think it looks simple and clean.
